Don Axinn Novels
ALLAN, BURNING
Happily married with two beautiful children, successful architect and avid amateur aviator Allan Daniels finds his life plummeting into a nightmare when his wife suddenly announces that she wants a separation, maybe a divorce. Two days later, as he is piloting a seaplane from Long Island to Key West, the engine of his Cessna 185 sputters, then quits.
Daniels' resolute skills as a pilot enable him to land safely in the Everglades, where a disheveled Native American man named Tommy Handley finds him. Handley belongs to the same tribe as Daniels' mother, but he also turns out to be a fugitive from justice, evading capture in the remote swamps. When Daniels wakes in the middle of the night to find Handley groping for his wallet, Daniels defends himself - and accidentally kills his rescuer.
Daniels' evasive explanation of what happened in the swamp doesn't sit well with savvy local lawman Sheriff Billy Haskins, who suspects that the pilot is hiding something. When Daniels finally confesses his guilt, it sets off a whole new chain of dire events in this fast-paced novel with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing until the final page. "Axinn, a true Renaissance man - poet, novelist, screenwriter, aviator, and businessman - loves to fly, and it shows in the exciting aviation scenes. And Donald Axinn loves to write, and that, too, shows in this wonderful evocation of Allan Daniels, who is indeed 'burning'"
--Nelson DeMille
author of The Gate House, Wildfire, Nightfall, and The Gold Coast, among others
"ALLAN, BURNING flies us into a dark and hauntingly beautiful landscape populated by Native Americans, aviators, cops, and a big city protagonist ensnared in a deadly adventure. A tour de force by a novelist at the top of his game."
--Robert Gandt, historian and novelist
"Poet and pilot Don Axinn takes readers on a soaring, original adventure with ALLAN, BURNING. The book is lined with a deep knowledge of history, of human foibles and aspiration - and it's just plain page-turning fun to read."

The Ego Makers
"Henry Martin is a man with a problem. Along with his brother Steve, Henry has taken his father's construction company from obscurity to a large-scale success. He has reached his ultimate goal with the completion of a Park Avenue skyscraper. His success is short lived due to the sabotage of his business during a minor recession. The situation is so dire for the company that Henry's mentor and friend Phelan is unable and unwilling to intercede. The who and the why behind the company's loss sets this story apart and are directly related to Henry and his ego. It's during Henry's solo flight out West that he reevaluates everything in his life. Through his new insights, he is able to recapture most of what he has lost. The author deftly weaves flashbacks of family relationships, dramatic wartime flying experiences, and past love relationships. It's an appealing story of corporate adventure, relationships, and a successful merger of the two, for Henry Martin as well as the reader."
from Booklist
"The Ego Makers is a fast-paced, high energy narrative in the tradition of Bonfire of the Vanities. Here, Axinn takes on a world he knows well, the precarious, exhilarating world of high finance and commercial real estate. This is the story of a man's rise and fall, and his efforts to reconstitute himself in the face of defeat and disillusion."
--Jay Parini
author of Benjamin's Crossing and The Apprentice Lover
